Bus Route Optimization
PACKLab Project: How can NC State improve the sustainability and rider experience of the Wolfline transit system using a systems approach?
An Industrial and Systems Engineering Senior Design team evaluated the environmental and operational performance of the Wolfline system to lower emissions and wait times.
Project Overview
Team: Industrial and Systems Engineering Senior Design course, Transportation
Duration: Fall 2022
Status: Complete
Focus: Transportation
Summary
NC State sought to enhance both the environmental sustainability and overall rider experience of its campus transit system, known as the Wolfline. A senior design team applied a systems engineering approach to evaluate current transit operations and environmental impact. The team developed a comprehensive cost-benefit analysis alongside custom efficiency and route optimization tools to identify key operational improvements.
Findings
The proposed optimization strategies and tools demonstrated the potential to reduce transit emissions by 70% while saving campus riders over 140 hours of collective wait time.
