The Semester at CMAST program allows students to get their feet wet and hands sandy alongside top professional researchers and graduate students, offering them unprecedented exposure to all facets of marine science. Semester at CMAST is the first-of-its-kind NC State commitment for a semester-long, academic coastal and marine program for undergraduate students.

Participating students will take a full, academic semester at CMAST, earning 16 credits toward their NC State degree.

Are you building a startup focused on ocean health, climate, sustainability, or the Blue Economy?

Ocean Exchange is seeking innovative student entrepreneurs developing technologies, products, or systems that can create meaningful environmental impact while demonstrating commercial potential.

Five student-led startups will each receive a $10,000 non-dilutive award, and finalists will be invited to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with all travel expenses covered, to present their innovations before leaders from industry, academia, investment, and government.

In addition to funding, finalists gain national exposure, valuable mentorship, and connections to a global network dedicated to helping innovative companies succeed.

This opportunity is funded by NC WRRI and North Carolina Sea Grant. It is open to any full-time graduate student at North Carolina’s colleges and universities, regardless of citizenship. Proposed research should be conducted under the guidance of a faculty advisor.

Research should address one or more of these focus areas:

• Algal bloom processes and toxins
• Economics, planning, and/or policy related to water resources management
• Emerging regulated and unregulated contaminants of concern
• Erosion and sediment control, including shoreline stabilization
• Trash, litter, and marine debris
• Surface and groundwater quality and/or quantity
• Risk communication to and residents’ perception of community flooding
• Water treatment, including drinking water, wastewater, and aquaculture effluent
• Applications of remotely sensed data within water resources research

Navigating a Changing Coast: Strengthening State, Local, and Tribal Resilience with Emerging Geospatial Technologies

You are invited to submit abstracts of 300 words or less for the 2027 Coastal GeoTools Conference, held in Charleston, South Carolina, from January 25 to 27, 2027. Abstracts must be submitted via the online submission form by September 28, 2026. Presenters are responsible for all expenses related to preparing and presenting their papers. Additionally, all presenters must pay registration fees and attend the conference in person.

Submitted abstracts will undergo peer review, and acceptance emails will be sent in late October.
